Firoz Mahmud is an artist born in Khulna, Bangladesh. His series NinKI: UoPD (Urgency of Proximate Drawing) is the one that had to be included here!
`Ninki` is Japanese for popular. The `Ninki: UoPD Project` of drawings on photographs consisting of numerous archetypal images of popular celebrities in vague appearance. The popular celebrities were all popular icons during their span of career, but all have been blemished by controversy for one reason or another. Shown here are Asashoryu (25 times top division Sumo champion in Japan), Mike Tyson, Diego Maradona and Shoib Akhter (world`s fastest cricket bowler).
Their idolized appearances are highlighted by protective line drawings that Firoz calls:
"display an awareness of the performative ethos of iconic expression. The drawing line structure underneath the falling position imply that stardom can`t fall down from the gestures and positions that they are held in. I am rescuing them from their predictable danger."
The result: fascinating, unique art of the biggest sport stars in the world. And the first sumo art featured here! Read more about Firoz and his work here!
