Because of wanting to include as many different sports and different styles at Art Loves Sport, the decision to include John Maitland came down to his portraying of cricket, but also his painting style.
John Maitland’s skillfully executed oil and acrylic paintings are informed by figurative expressionism and imbued with rigorous colour and texture to denote emotive nuance. John himself describes his painting as expressionist.
He aims when he picks up a paint brush to create a work with as much energy and movement as he can muster . . . something animated and emotive. Succeeded sir John!
Shown here are his works of the sport of cricket which are really figurative and show his skill for depicting movement, people and the surroundings in a Matisse like way. Big words, but well deserved we think!
